A Diamond in the Rough

https://www.trainlikeaballerina.com/post/overcoming-injuries  This article is a diamond in the rough for my inquiry and my practice, the way it is written and the content is somehow what I would want to say overall in how to overcome injuries and the importance of mindset.  As I finalise my analysis I will add mindset into my inquiry as I now feel, after going over everything, that it is probably the biggest theme, that I have found and one that I want to continue with my practice and in my daily life.

Covid affecting dance and dance teachers

When further exploring my data and now the new restrictions in the UK coming into effect I had to take a step back and think about how to proceed with my inquiry. The restrictions are changing the very shape of the dance industry and now my practice too. I am exploring the effect of injury on young dancers, in a mental and physical way but now socially it is effecting them too. As I delve in deeper to my inquiry I cannot ignore the pandemic, so have decided to include it in my inquiry because the mental injury and physical injuries that can occur in young dancers could get heightened within times like today.  The new normal has been incredibly different and whilst working on Module 3 a rollercoaster. But this has also taught me about adaptability which is a hugely apparent when injury occurs. The ability to adapt to the new normal when injured and adapt your dancing around that is a huge challenge physically but also mentally. The mental is proving to be even more important than I prev

Lockdown

So through data gathering I have been a little inactive because I had to wait until I knew what was happening with the lockdown in order to schedule in interviews and observations. I had got most of my data gathering in observation done in person which was great. But with the interview I now have to do through an email format as my participants don’t have time for Zoom.  It’s a small mishap but something I will include in my essay.

Data gathering

I got my consent forms back and I have now started data gathering. It wasn’t exactly what I had expected. I think the participants knew I was there In observations so put on their best faces. However this quickly disappeared once they got into it. Some things did shock me that I hadn’t really noticed before, however this allowed me to collect more raw qualitative data.  I also got some opinions from asking questions to someone else within my employment who isn’t in my practice but has been surrounded by it and who’s opinion on certain impacts on young dancers I think is important. I’m just unsure how to present her within my data.

Preparing my inquiry

I am currently getting consent forms for my participants ready to begin my inquiry.  I will observe them over the next 3 weeks in how they teach dance lessons as well as interviewing them on how they use their practice to overcome certain obstacles in a class so that the teaching environment is one of learning, safety and fun for anyone who chooses to join- no matter what social, mental or physical restrictions that might get in the way. I am not there to judge these participants on how they convey their practice I am merely seeing it from a different perspective than my own.  I expect because of the ages of my participants are between 30 and 70, certain ideas and practices may be very different to mine in my practice as I grew up in a very different and ever changing generation.  I am a teacher who believes dance is for everyone and no matter what restrictions are in place, I can adapt and be aware of them and improve my teaching to fit the many not the few. Whereas some other teacher

Starting Module 3

As I start this final module I am more focused and relaxed in my practice. The current world pandemic and lockdown gave me time and breathing space to get more focused on my practice and where I want to take it next. I was able to move my teaching online as well as create a dance challenge of 55 days for the students I teach and their families to have some fun - just dancing . I had gotten so many positive reviews from it saying how it helped the children to have fun and put their minds to something enjoyable whilst the world was very negative. This also helped me through it too. I am now more determined than ever to not only complete this module but also bring this new focused me into my practice- that I hope I can use these new parts of me for many many years to come. Lets have ya Module 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ethical concerns with my proposal

I have been doing more research into my proposal and ultimately the main ethical consideration are who I will be using for it. Children. Adding into the fact that they have medical issues which are also highly personal. This will require me to get consent from parents and my superiors in order to carry out any real data gathering as just observation could be okay but won’t be enough for an in depth analysis of how the issues affect the children and their movement This week has involved a lot of ethical research and discussions with my superiors over how I can proceed with my enquire in the next module in the best most efficient way for everyone. Without impacting my job.
