Twilight Skype discussion 16/10/19

Within this Skype there were a lot of different discussions one that i will use and relate to within my practice will be the use of culture within the arts. And most importantly for dance teaching. Cultural differences. These differences can also be linked to generational differences too
I got from this Skype the importance of culture within any practice nowadays. Our culture is changing fast from when I grew up and with more different cultures now within the UK as a person and a teacher or leader I need to be more aware. Working with children this awareness should be at the forefront of how I teach.

Another part of this Skype we talked about was literature and how it can enforce our practice and help further this course. Literature is a key aspect to help me learn more and be a better teacher as it allows me to find out more about learning cycles and ways of the world for example what I have learnt through literature is about  participation, and how the more we participate the more open we become to experiences and to learn. Which is a highly interesting subject for me as a dance teacher.
Overall this Skype was highly helpful in what I’ve got to do within my module one essay and artefact and allowing me to create my own artefact that is quintessentially me. We talked about our own selves being the artefact as a base point. From this I am able to produce something that is a reflection of me,

my practice

Whilst currently doing my practice, dance teaching I have a main focus on observation going forward, both as I teach myself as well as when assisting as I learn to become a better teacher. I began to sit in some lessons with my current mentor who has taught me but also has over 50 years of experience. I found with observation myself noticing more positives and negatives towards different styles of teaching and how I teach. I picked up on some areas where I would've done something completely different as the outcome of certain teachers affects the few not the many. For me as a teacher I believe in helping and improving every single dancer, whether they want to do it as a career or just for fun. Lockdown

 So through data gathering I have been a little inactive because I had to wait until I knew what was happening with the lockdown in order to schedule in interviews and observations. I had got most of my data gathering in observation done in person which was great. But with the interview I now have to do through an email format as my participants don’t have time for Zoom.  It’s a small mishap but something I will include in my essay.

Beginning. And reflecting

With starting this programme I must be reflective. And in doing so on my life and my practice it brings up many different parts. Ethics. Feelings. Theories. Opinions.  My practice now is within dance teaching. A place I got to because of how my body had impacted my previous study in professional dance. That was all I wanted to be a ballerina. I auditioned and got in at numerous places but there was always something holding me back. Something that has held me back for years in dance. I never saw it as something that held me back though, that opinion being put in the hands of teachers and prospective places of study. Scoliosis. Something that is central to my practice now and has been before. However before I saw it as a negative because others told me it was. As I branch into teaching I see it as a strength. A way of helping others like me, raising awareness of it but also how knowing about anatomy and movement and putting that into practice can help dancers. And not hinder them ...
