my practice
Whilst currently doing my practice, dance teaching I have a main focus on observation going forward, both as I teach myself as well as when assisting as I learn to become a better teacher. I began to sit in some lessons with my current mentor who has taught me but also has over 50 years of experience.
I found with observation myself noticing more positives and negatives towards different styles of teaching and how I teach. I picked up on some areas where I would've done something completely different as the outcome of certain teachers affects the few not the many.
For me as a teacher I believe in helping and improving every single dancer, whether they want to do it as a career or just for fun. That feeling of improvement as a dancer myself is an amazing positive feeling for any human. This communication between teacher and student creates an amazing environment for children to grow up in. That's my goal as a teacher to have a positive impact on younger generations and pass on my love of dance, not my skill because that's mine that's special to me. The fun, the vibe of dance as a practice itself is astounding.
Dance is a discipline and growing up it taught me things that I will carry with me forever even if I didn't dance again after. Time management, spatial awareness, awareness of people, expression, freedom to name a few, I could go on. By looking back on how I learn I have gotten more of an appreciation for dance within my life and what it has taught me, I would like to give that to the younger generations. Dance changed my life.

Nice to hear your thoughts on dancing as a creative outlet and not worrying so much on the skill- I recently blogged about creativity and viewpoints from teachers. Check my blog out at swattsonstage.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteIt also extends into killing creativity and how a teachers viewpoints or society's can squash or flourish your creativity
